Social Bookmarking...Diigo...

A Web 2.0 technology that allows sharing of online websites in an organized fashion is social bookmarking.

When you bookmark a website, you create a record or tag to a link that you can refer to in the future. Social bookmarking allows you to share these links with others so that they can comment on the links, visit the links, or bookmark the links themselves. Social bookmarking is an online technology, therefore, the links can be accessed from any computer once you register for a social bookmarking site.

In the classroom, the value of using a bookmarking site are:.
  • Students can save the webpages that they visited and access the saved webpages from any computer at any time.
  • Teachers or students can leave comments about certain websites or suggest other websites.
I found a cool website, http://www.diigo.com/, which takes bookmarking websites to a new level. All you need to access and begin using the site is a computer. No downloads or programs are necessary. It has many cool features. Educators can set up an account and create student accounts. Also an advanced tool allows students to visit the bookmarked pages and leave comments in the form of a sticky note or highlight sections to convey or emphasize an idea. Lastly, privacy settings can be controlled by the teacher.
Be on the lookout in future posts for some examples using the website http://www.diigo.com/.
